Christi and I are season subscribers to the “Broadway/L.A.” series in Hollywood at the Pantages Theater. This is basically where the Broadway Musicals come to Los Angeles and show here. I have been a subscriber for a number of years now and shortly after Christi and I started dating (about 2 years ago), I called to see if I could get an additional ticket added in the seat right next to mine. The was important to me because 1) I LOVE musicals and seeing the Broadway shows; and 2) because I had 3rd row orchestra seats… so good you can see the sweat on the foreheads of the actors. Fortunately, Christi also likes musicals, so this is something we have in common.
Most of the shows that we have gone to see there have been wonderful. We have really only seen one show that was terrible (to us), and the main reason for that was that the main character who was supposed to be a young woman was played by a woman who must be in her 60’s now. It was SO hard to see her play this roll and take it seriously. Not to mention her singing was that of an older woman… which is fine, if that is the roll that is intended in the musical.
This most recent musical we went to see was Dr. Dolittle starring Tommy Tune. Neither Christi nor I really know who Tommy Tune is, but apparently most of the people over the age of 40 knew who he was and were excited to see him in the Musical. The musical was very good, but hard to get into just because of the theme of it. It sort of felt like the person who wrote this musical was on drugs. The music was great, the acting was wonderful, and the staging was beautiful. So, overall we enjoyed it, but it just was hard to get into.
We only have one more musical to go see in our subscription series for this year. Our last musical we will see in this series is “Little Women” and we are excited to see this one. I am slightly bummed that we will be giving up our 3rd row tickets and buying tickets for the Broadway series in Orange County because it takes at least 3 hours (often more) round trip to go up to Hollywood for the Broadway/L.A. series. The Orange County series will take us maybe 10 minutes to get to. The driving time makes enough of a difference to make the change, but it is hard to give up such amazing seats. But, it will be worth it in the long run. Christi and I are anxious to find out what seats we can get in Orange County and also to see what the new series of musicals will be.
